Picking Bullace plums in Jill Webb s organic orchards
Jul 30, 2009

Yesterday we went to pick delectable, otherwise unobtainable, Bullace plums in Jill Webb s organic orchards on the Weald of Kent. Drove through the Tunnel with ladders strapped to the car roof, buckets and basins loaded inside, and an hour later we were ducking and diving through villages of half timbered cottages and leaded windows, ancient yew hedges and mediaeval churches. At the farm we were greeted by Merlin the lurcher and by trees crammed with fruit. Never seen them like this before and we ve been picking here for some ten years now. It s a deep delight just to be here, in this myth-filled corner of Kent. The farm is made possible by the thriving software business that purrs away in the converted barn. Blissfully insouciant of the pressures that a hard core commercial agri business would put on them, Jill s sheep munch alongside as we pick.
